| Lot description: SPAIN, mints uncertain, lot of seven coins in different denominations in a wooden frame with glass, the coins mounted inside a letter from 1898 signed by the U.S. Chief Clerk, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts. Frame measures 10-1/4" x 9-1/4". A unique and important original Spanish-American War memento, the coins generally worn and polished but solid, just mostly dark from oxidation, each with clear details and representing several Spanish administrations (Isabel II, provisional government, Alfonso XII and XIII), all embedded inside an original letter that lists them as follows: 5 pesetas 1878; 2 pesetas 1869 and 1881; 1 peseta 1858, 1869, and 1895; and 50 centimos 1892. The letter is signed by what looks like N.S. Faucett as Chief Clerk, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts, and certifies that these coins were "purchased from the Government through me" after being "taken from the safe of the Spanish cruiser 'Cristobal Colon' after her destruction by the American fleet, July 3, 1898.".
