Lot description:

PERU, Lima, 2 reales, Philip II, assayer R (Rincón) to left, motto PL-VSV-LT below denomination, rare, Grade 1. S-L1; KM-8; Cal-332. 6.27 grams. Exceptionally broad flan with full crown and legends (bold king's ordinal II, for example) and good full inner details that show slight doubling only on the right pillar, rare variety with denomination ABOVE the motto, contrastingly toned, amazingly 100% corrosion-free but showing some circulation wear as expected for a coin that was already 50 years old when the ship sank (from the first coinage struck in South America), clearly a coin that should have been selected for the Research Collection. With original Fisher tag and photo-certificate 85A-237741. Recovered from: Atocha, sunk in 1622 west of Key West, Florida

Estimate: $2500 - $5000
