Lot description:

PERU, Lima, gold cob 2 escudos, 1709 M, pillars side struck from 2R Royal (galano) die, unique, NGC MS 65 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label), finest and only example in NGC census. S-L28; KM-unl; Cal-unl. 6.69 grams. Exceptionally broad flan with superb luster all over, full legend around slightly off-center full cross-lions-castles, less legend on the pillars side due to slightly larger design made for silver 2 reales Royals (galanos), an eye-catching muling that has been seen on only one other coin from the 1715 Fleet, a 1710-dated 2E impounded in the State of Florida collection, although other examples of wrong-die use do crop up in later years at this mint. It is not often that something totally unlisted and unique comes along, let alone one in such choice condition, hence this 1709 is sure to turn heads in the community of gold-cob collectors. From the 1715 Fleet, with Sedwick photo-certificate.

Estimate: $25000 - $50000
