Lot description: ANGLO-SAXON. Kings of Wessex. Eadred. 946-955. AR two line penny. 1.26 gm. 22 mm. BMC i. HR 1. "York" mint. Hunred, moneyer. Small cross patee, +EΛDREDREX around / HVNR EDMO in two lines, a trefoil top and bottom, three crosses between the two lines of the legend. S. 1113. N. 707. Near Extremely Fine; rich gray toning over fresh surfaces; minor bits of surface deposit; handsome coin. York during Eadred's reign was held a couple of times by the Norwegian Viking Eric Bloodaxe. First driven out temporarily in 948/9, he was killed in 954 near the end of Eadred's reign. Hunred was one of the coiners at the end of the reign and his reverse die also appears on a coin of Eadwig, elder son of Eadmund and successor of Eadred. Estimate: 1850 USD |
