Lot description: The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. George III. 1760-1820. Pattern CU Halfpenny. Tower (London) mint. Dies by T. Pingo (?). Dated 1796. GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA, laureate, draped, and armored bust left / BRITAN NIA ·, Britannia seated left on globe and shield, holding olive branch and spear; 1796 in exergue. Edge: plain. Peck 924. Some lustre. Softly struck in parts as usual. Very rare. In NGC encapsulation 2153870-023, graded MS 62 BN. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 91 (19 September 2012), lot 1562. An elegant swan song to the old screw press age before Matthew Boulton's steam presses would pour forth their issues the following year ushering in a new era in mechanised coin production.
