Lot description: The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. Anne. 1702-1714. AV Medal (35mm, 23.19 g, 12h). Peace of Utrecht. By J. Croker. Dated 1713 (in Roman numerals). ANNA · D : G · MAG · BRI FR : ET · HIB : REG ·, laureate and draped bust left / Britannia standing left, holding olive branch and spear; in background, ships under sail right and pastoral scene; MDCCXIII in exergue. MI 400/257; Eimer 460. An impressive, well struck medal. Toned with extensive brilliance. Very rare this choice. In NGC encapsulation 2153882-002, graded MS 64. The Peace of Utrecht which formally ended the War of Spanish Succession that had raged for some 14 years across much of the globe, was met by an outpouring of universal joy. Numerous medals commemorate the event including this particularly fine one by Croker issued by the Royal Mint. The new peaceful age is alluded to in several of the rare pattern farthing issues dated 1713 and 1714 which Cope formed a focussed collection of. See the following lots. Estimate: 15000 CHF |
