| Lot description: The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. Anne. 1702-1714. AV Medal (35mm, 17.71 g, 12h). Coronation. By J. Croker. Dated 23 April 1702 (in Roman numerals). ANNA · D : G : MAG : BR : FR : ET · HIB : REGINA ·, draped bust left / VICEM GERIT · ILLA · TONANTIS ·, Minerva standing right, holding shield and hurling thunderbolt at two-headed and four-armed serpentine monster to right, holding rocks and clubs; in two lines in exergue, INAVGVRAT · XXIII · AP/MDCCII ·. MI 228/4; Eimer 390. Well struck. Much brilliance under rich tone. Very rare. In NGC encapsulation 2153526-007, graded MS 61. In 2015 Joseph Hone, a postgraduate student at Oxford University, discovered that the design for this richly allegorical medal was derived by sketches made by Isaac Newton, then Master of the Mint. Newton's own notes state that the double headed monster being struck down by Anne as Minerva represents the twin threats of Louis XIV of France and the Old Pretender, James Francis Edward Stuart.
