Ex Gregory (Part II, Baldwin 47, 25 September 2006), lot 499.
This coin exhibited, Coins, Crown & Conflict, American Numismatic Association, Money Museum, 2007.
The impetuous behind the issue of tin farthings late in the reign of Charles II was threefold; the extensive of forgery of the circulating copper farthings and halfpennies of the 1670s, a crisis in the British tin mining industry due to a collapse in the price of the metal, and the handsome profits such a coinage would yield. Tin coins - also struck for James II and William & Mary - are today mostly found in damaged and corroded states. The Cope collection contains an exceptional offering in superb condition.

Estimate: 2000 CHF
