The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. Charles I 'Fine Work' Shillings of the Tower Mint.
AR Halfcrown (35mm, 14.63 g, 4h). Truro mint; im: rose. Struck 1642-1643. Charles on horseback galloping left, holding baton and reins / Crowned coat-of-arms; C R flanking. Lockett, "Notes on the mints of Truro and Exeter under Charles I," in BNJ XXII (1938), 2 and pl. iii., 19 (this coin illustrated); Bull 652/6 (this coin cited); Besly B6.1 = Brooker 1015 (this coin); North 2535; SCBC 3047 (this coin illustrated).
Diagnostic die break on obverse and a few minor marks. Deeply toned.
Good VF. The finer of only two specimens known for this key provincial halfcrown.

This obverse of this very distinctive Halfcrown is clearly derived from Thomas Simon's medal commemorating the Scottish Rebellion issued in 1639.
