Lot description: The Geoffrey Cope Collection of British Coins. Philip & Mary. 1554-1558. AR Shilling (31mm, 5.88 g, 3h). London mint. Dated 1554. Confronted busts of Philip, armored and wearing ruff, and Mary, wearing gable hood and small ruff; crown above / Crowned coat-of-arms. Full titles. Two small lis countermarks on obverse, one on reverse. North 1967; SCBC 2500. Small edge split. Deep tone. Near EF. Strong detail to portraits. The countermarks most unusual. Rare. While there was a brief period of countermarking early in the reign of Elizabeth, the distinctive small lis' found on this coin appear to be otherwise unknown in the English series. They most certainly originate on the continent, possibly from the city of Bruges. Estimate: 4000 CHF |
