Son of Edward, he gained the submission of Northumbria in 927 and became the first King of all England. Anlaf Guthfrithsson and Constantine II of Scotland gathered a vast army but were defeated by Aethelstan at the great battle of Brunanburh, with great slaughter on both sides.
