Lot description:

Thailand
Rama V bronze "First Tour of Europe" Uniface Plaque RS 116 (1897) AU, cf. Forrer-425 (there at 50mm). 250mm. By Henri Auguste Jules Patey. Wholly intriguing and the first example of this incredibly scarce type, estimated at a mintage of fewer than 10, this cataloger has handled. Medals of this type were struck to commemorate Rama V's first "Grand Tour," where it is purported after visiting the Monnaie de Paris, Rama commissioned the mint to strike 30mm and 50mm issued in celebration of his travels, a type that is incredibly popular and scarce today. One of just a small handful of these original, large castings from Patey's first mold, and highly desirable as such. Accompanied by an original leather-bound, velvet-lined presentation case.
