Lot description: Netherlands William of Orange gold Specimen "Protection in Your Absence" Medal ND (1691) SP63 PCGS, cf. MIR 686-69 (obverse), Vanhoudt 1691-2. 37mm. 23.81gm. By Jan Smeltzing. MARIA D G M BRIT FRAN ET HIB REGINA F D P A Laureate bust left // TE ABSENTE TUEBOR Lioness trampling two snakes to protect male lion and three lion cubs; in exergue REGI REDUCI. Struck to commemorate the sovereignty of Queen Mary during one of William III's excursions to the Low Countries. This type is seldom available in silver with just one public auction result locatable by this cataloger, and our offering is the only gold example known to our firm or PCGS to-date. The Choice preservation here is exemplary, retaining vigorous flash from remnant die polish lines and hints of terracotta patination in the crevices and open areas. The raised motifs admit no notable disturbance to their highpoints, claiming exquisite articulation and coolness for their character. Likely one of a handful of gold pieces extant, undoubtedly heading for a very advanced cabinet.
