The Royal Society annually awards the Royal (King's) Medal for Astronomy to individuals for their outstanding contributions to the applied sciences. In 1918, this honor was bestowed upon the renowned English astronomer and astrophysicist, Alfred Fowler. Fowler's contributions to astronomical physics, including his spectroscopic observations of eclipses, solar prominences, and sunspots, as well as his experimental research, earned him a Fellowship at the Royal Society in 1910. Awarded the Royal Society's Prize Medal in 1918, Fowler continued to contribute to the field of astronomy, serving as President of the Royal Astronomical Society between 1919 and 1921.
