| Lot description: Great Britain George IV gold "Coronation" Medal 1821 MS63★ NGC, Eimer-1146a, BHM-1070. By Benedetto Pistrucci. GEORGIUS III D G BRITANNIARUM REX F D Laureate head left // PROPRIO JAM JURE ANIMO PATERNO King George VI seated on throne being crowed by Victory from behind, approached by allegorical figures Britannia, Hibernia, and Scotia from the left; in exergue INAUGURATUS / DIE JULII XIX / ANNO MDCCCXXI. On offer is one of the finest extant representatives of this official Coronation Medal in gold, elusive as a type, much less at this condition. This historical issue marks both the beginning of a new era after the death of "Mad King" George III, but also gives a reason for famed engraver Benedetto Pistrucci's fall from favor. While appreciated by many, his design did not entice the King, maintaining a distaste for being represented on the same level as the allegorical figures representing his kingdom. Nonetheless, the preservation of Pistrucci's design on display here is astounding. George's effigy rises in high relief and without a mark of consequence, a feat matched in the fields where, instead of obvious contact marks, one sees replete die polish lines servicing a regal "flash" to the flan. In fact, this cataloger is surprised by the lack of Prooflike designation from the certification company, but can confirm the "star" quality acknowledged by NGC.
