| Lot description: Great Britain Oliver Cromwell gold Proof Pattern Broad of 20 Shillings 1656 UNC Details (Cleaned) PCGS, KM-Pn25, S-3225, N-2744, W&R-39 (R2), Schneider-367, EGC-75. Reeded edge. By Thomas Simon. Here we see the clear result of Oliver Cromwell's attempt to both beautify and modernize Britain's circulating coinage with the employment of medalist Thomas Simon and French engineer and moneyer Pierre Blondeau. Though displaying light hairlines throughout from a past cleaning, the Proof qualities of this special issue still manifest in the remaining appearance through backlit luminosity and powerful detail, both on the design and the rims, for an issue of this age. Since its cleaning, which may date back centuries, a significant amount of re-toning has developed, enhancing the coin's numerous appealing visual characteristics. Ex.
