Lot description:

Great Britain
Victoria gold "Shield" Sovereign 1871 MS65+ PCGS, KM736.2, S-3853B, Marsh-55A (R5). Die #1, specimen strike. With Prooflike characteristics and a clearly superior strike compared to other die numbers and business strikes for the date. Baldwin's cataloger posited the coin was "most likely struck for a VIP" and we concur; this coin was not coined by random but was born of extra effort and care to be presented for a distinguished recipient. Regrettably it is not known how many Die #1 Sovereigns have been certified to-date, as all the die numbers are pooled together in the PCGS census. Described as "the finest known 1871 Sovereign in the world" by Baldwin's cataloger, the selection at hand is an undeniably unusual Gem with an impeccable pedigree, and we anticipate hotly contested bidding activity to commensurate with that fact.
