| Lot description: Great Britain Victoria gold "Ansell" Sovereign 1859 AU58 NGC, KM736.3, S-3852E, Marsh-42A. Of immense scarcity within the Victorian Sovereign series, the so-called Ansell Sovereigns (named for experiments of Royal Mint official George Frederick Ansell) are a coveted bunch. Their elusiveness comes from a result of Ansell's experiments in striking coins from confiscated brittle gold. Though the surfaces are nearly as brilliant as a Mint State coin, just the faintest hints of circulation display as gentle rub on the high points and light friction in the expanses. A highly desirable type that is not often offered for sale in as nice of condition as this.
