Lot description: Great Britain Victoria gold "Narrow Shield" Sovereign 1838 XF40 PCGS, KM736.1, S-3852A, Marsh-22A (R3). Narrow shield variety. From the inaugural year of Queen Victoria's business strike Sovereign, this coin presents as a remarkable rarity. Distinguished by its slimmer reverse shield, different top-leaf arrangement in the wreath, and a uniquely styled crown, this particular variant went unnoticed for over a century after its release. Regrettably by the time it was discovered by collectors, most had been lost due to the Victorian habit of melting down worn Sovereigns. The rare specimens that remain have typically seen significant circulation, including this one. Graded Extremely Fine 40 by PCGS, it exhibits moderate yet balanced wear, maintaining appreciable details in Victoria's effigy and lingering luster to peripherals. An exceptionally rare find and among the few of its kind, this coin is an essential acquisition for the dedicated Sovereign collector.
