Lot description: Great Britain George IV gold 2 Pounds 1823 MS63 NGC, KM690, S-3798, Marsh-T6. This coin represents a unique one-year type and marks the inaugural issuance of the 2 Pounds denomination. Due to internal conflicts at the Royal Mint, it was Assistant Engraver Jean (Johann) Baptiste Merlen who took up the task of crafting George IV's effigy based on Chanterey's bust, after the headstrong Chief Engraver Pistrucci declined to use a "non-life" model. The exact original mintage remains unknown, and nowadays, it's common to find these pieces having been altered for jewelry, cleaned, or otherwise mishandled over two centuries. The present selection presents an enticing opportunity to acquire a Choice straight-graded example to an ambitious cabinet.
