Lot description: Great Britain George IV gold Sovereign 1823 MS61 PCGS, KM682, S-3800, Marsh-7 (R3). There are two rare dates for the laureate head series of George IV, 1823 and 1825 with the present selection representing the arguably better one. The full-bodied effigy on the present selection expresses the engraved details with distinction and aplomb. Turning to the reverse, the visual appeal is elevated by gentle touches of luster rolling when rotated in hand. For historical reference, an example adjectivally described as "good extremely fine" dispersed from the Bentley Collection in 2012 attracted a final bid of approximately $30,000 inclusive of buyer's premium, perhaps lending perspective to the desirability of this elusive date.
