Lot description: Australia Victoria gold "St. George" Sovereign 1884-M AU50 PCGS, Melbourne mint, KM7, S-3857C, Marsh-106A (S). WW complete on truncation, horse with short tail, with BP in exergue. An attainable example of the listed type, decently handled but still bearing the remnants of a strong strike and hints of peripheral luster. We note that although PCGS has listed this coin under the Spink variety with BP in exergue, it is our firm's stance that this specimen should fall under the Spink variety with no BP in exergue (cf. S-3857E), a discrepancy tied to uneven flan texture in the exergue area where the initials would normally appear. This latter variety is listed in Spink as "extremely rare," as is supported by the limited population available for the "no BP" variety at PCGS. Certainly a piece deserving of a second look amongst Sovereign collectors.
