The Safavid Dynasty, ruling from 1501 to 1736 CE, was a pivotal period in Persian history. Founded by Shah Esma_'il I., it marked the resurgence of Persian sovereignty after centuries of foreign domination. The Safavids established Twelver Shia Islam as the state religion, leading to a distinct cultural identity that blended Persian and Shia traditions. Under Shah Abbas I, the empire reached its zenith, with flourishing art, architecture, and trade. However, internal strife and external pressures, particularly from the Ottoman Empire and later Tsarist Russia, weakened the Safavids, leading to their eventual collapse in the 18th century. Despite their downfall, the Safavid legacy endures through their contributions to Persian culture, art, and religious identity.
Esma'il I. (1487-1524), son of Seikh Heidar, enthronement 1501 in Tabriz. He died on May 23, 1524.

Purchased from A. Shams, Frankfurt, in 1985.
