Lot description: CRUSADERS, County of Tripoli. AV Bezant (20.5mm, 4.54 g, 7h). Imitating a gold dinar of the Fatimid caliph al-Mustansir . 'Misr' mint. Dated 'AH 345'. Balog & Yvon 2; Album 720. Wavy flan, traces of deposit. Fine. The mint and date on this coin are quite legible, but the die-engraver has written the decade as arbat, 'four', instead of arba'in, 'forty'. The date is not merely incorrect for al-Mustansir but would also predate the Fatimid conquest of Egypt, and it is curious that the engraver should have rendered an impossible date so carefully. Estimate: 250 USD |
