Lot description: Ikhshidids. Muhammad al-Ikhshid. AH 323-334 / AD 935-946. AR Donative Half-Mithqal (17.4mm, 2.17 g, 8h). Misr mint. Undated. Obverse: Tamga with name Muhammad below; bismillah duriba hadha al-dirham bi-Misr around / Reverse: name of caliph in three lines; kalima around . Cf. Morton & Eden auction 103 (24 October 2019), lot 103; cf. Bacharach 215 (a similar coin of full mithqal weight); Album A676 RRR. Near Fine, cleaned. Excessively rare. The tamga on the obverse similar to those seen on pre-Islamic copper coins of Samarqand, whose rulers also bore the title of Ikhshid. As Bacharach observes, 'Muhammad ibn Tughj's use of this device on a presentation piece signals the strength of his memory of his Central Asian origins and the steps he would take to legitimize those associations.' (Bacharach p. 30). Estimate: 1000 USD |
