Lot description:

Umayyad Caliphate, n/a. Silver coinage. n/a. n/a. AR Pattern or Trial (18mm, 6.58 g, 12h). Without mint or date. Obverse: la ilaha illa / Allah wahdahu / la sharik lahu, five simple annulets in outer margin, double linear border around field and outer margin / Reverse: Muhammad / rasul / Allah, five simple annulets in outer margin, double border of dots around field and outer margin. Unpublished. Test marks on edge and below reverse field. VF. Apparently unpublished and believed unique.

This enigmatic piece could be Umayyad or early 'Abbasid. The presence of Muhammad rasul Allah on the reverse recalls early 'Abbasid dirhams, but the five plain annulets are a characteristic of Umayyad post-Reform silver, and are also occasionally found on Umayyad fulus. Its status is unclear, but it has been carefully made on an exceptionally thick flan (2.4mm) and was presumably intended as a pattern or trial of some kind. Both test marks suggest that the piece is made of solid silver.

Estimate: 5000 USD
