Visit of Naser al-Din Shah to the City of London, 1873, AE Double Medal Presentation Set, presented by the Lord Mayor of London, by A.B. Wyon, NASSER-ED-DEEN SHAH OF PERSIA, draped and wearing a fez decorated with a diamond aigrette, bust three-quarters right, rev. Londinia standing between shields of London and Persia, head right, holds a scroll in her outstretched hand inscribed 20TH JUNE 1873, beyond St. Paul's Cathedral and the Tower of London, 246.36g, 77mm; 250.33g, 77mm (Eimer 1623; BHM 2951), the first with a scattering of light contact marking, otherwise brilliant and toned to the fields upon light brown surfaces, extremely fine, the second heavily cleaned to the obverse and some residue to the reverse, nonetheless still with a brilliance and cabinet tone to the fields, very fine / extremely fine, both housed in original decoratively engraved presentation case, broken at the hinges but otherwise in working order, scarce even in such condition (2).
Nasr-ed-Din (1829-1896), Shah of Persia, visited England from 17th June to 5th July 1873 as part of a tour of Europe. He was met at Dover by the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Arthur and travelled by special train to London where he was met by the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge who then escorted him to Buckingham Palace. On 21st June a reception in honour of the Shah was held at the Guildhall, to which some 3,000 guests were invited by the Corporation of the City of London.
