(x) Earl of Essex, Military Reward, AR Medal, 1642, by T. Rawlins, SHOULD HEAR BOTH HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT FOR TRUE RELIGION AND SUBIECTS FREDOM STAND | PRO RELIGIONE . LEGE. REGE. ET. PARLIAMENTO, half length figure of Essex, almost facing, armoured and holding an upright sword, above SX incuse, rev. two equal horizontal sections containing the two Parliaments in which the King and the Speaker are seated, with suspension loop at top, plain edge, 27mm by 38mm, 6.49g, (Eimer 140b; MI i, 295/113; Farquhar 1905/248), wear to higher points include facial details, otherwise toned, very fine.
This medal was issued in both gold and silver, was given to those in Essex's army. Even though the army was fighting against the crown, the King is still represented as seated upon his throne. Essex declared "I do promise in the sight of Almighty God, that I shall undertake nothing but what shall tend to the advancement of the true Protestant Religion, the security of his Majesty's royal person, the maintenance of the just privileges of Parliament and the liberty and property of the subject."
