| Lot description: George II (1727-1760), 'Roses and Plumes' Shilling, 1728, younger laureate, draped and cuirassed bust left, rev. crowned shields cruciform, seven strings to harp, roses and plumes in angles, edge obliquely milled, 5.95g, 6h (ESC 1192 [R2]; Bull 1696; Spink 3698), handsomely toned with residual flaring in recesses, good very fine, surprisingly rare. Provenance, Lord Hamilton of Dalzell MC, Spink 3, 21 February 1979, lot 443 [with his ticket, stating:], Spink, by private treaty, June 1954 - "about EF" - £1.15.0, H C Dangar, Glendining, 15-16 April 1953, lot 389 [part] - "...all extremely fine" - £14.0.0 [Spink], , The Hamilton ticket also alludes to a 'Clark collection', despite extensive trawling through the Manville corpus, no suitable Clark(e)/Clerk can be traced. Notably the type is omitted from the 1937 Clarke-Thornhill dispersal. , , Furthermore, at the Grant R Francis dispersal at Glendining in March 1920, the following observation was made for this type: "Shillings, those of the first four years very rare; that of 1728, roses and plumes, exceedingly so" Estimate: £250 - £350 |  |
