Lot description:

NETHERLANDS EAST INDIES. Japanese Occupation. Silvered Bronze Participation Badge, Year 17 (1942 [of Showa]). VERY FINE.
Diameter: 26mm; Weight: 7.58 gms. Obverse: 年二百六千二紀皇 / 念記加参戰方南爭戰亞東大, outline of various islands/land appearing to be (starting from upper left and moving clockwise) the Malay Peninsula, western Borneo, Bangka, and Sumatra (with its various small coastal islands); Reverse: Palm tree to left in foreground; two stars in sky, mountains in background; 年七十和昭 in exergue. Loop attached at the top. Some scattered marks and mottling of the color, but seemingly a VERY RARE participation badge or award that parallels the many Filipino issues by Japan from the same year. Dated (on the obverse) to the imperial era 2602 and (on the reverse) to Showa 17, this would comport with Japan's invasion of the Netherlands East Indies and, specifically Sumatra, in early 1942, as part of the Great East Asian War. Indeed, even the reverse features iconography (such as the palm tree and stars) that evokes a similar look to those issued as part of the campaign in the Philippines.

Estimate: $500 - $750
