GIBRALTAR. Gibraltar - Mexico. 1/2 Bit, ND (ca. 1770-72). George III. NGC VF-20.
KM-16 (Martinique); Prid-20 (Dominica). Countermark: Type IV bifacial; blunt heart-shaped cut-out with ornamented edges on both sides. Applied to a 1746-Mo M Mexico pillar 1/2 Real of Philip V (KM-66). This handsome little minor coin exhibits even wear displaying pleasing old cabinet patina with iridescent hues in the protected areas. Pierced from the obverse with most of the ornamental design features present. Clearly an example which sat for a prolonged period of time undisturbed lending to its originality.

This series was originally attributed to Martinique in the literature--where it still appears in KM--but is now believed, according to Bob Lyall in his research of 2007 and 2008, to be from Gibraltar instead. There are four distinct types from this series, the first two type with rough central cuts are placed to this territory. While type IV with ornamented edge, such as the present piece, seems to have origins in Gibraltar, but were apparently withdrawn from circulation between 1762-98. This is further corroborated by council minutes 12 September 1798 which states that the dollars with the heart hold were to advance in value from 10 to 11 Bitts.

SANTO DOMINGO. Santo Domingo - Venezuela. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1813-20). Ferdinand VII. NGC AU-55.
EMO-913.1 (Plate coin); KM-2; Cal-120. Type 1 with "S.D" dividing denomination. Overstruck on 1813 Maracaibo Real (KM-3). A stunning example of this overstruck issue, EXTREMELY RARE in this elite state of preservation. The product of a forceful but uneven strike, it displays a remarkable hybrid of the undertype and overtype. The obverse shows the crown and king's ordinal quite boldly on the right, coupled with a segment of the crisp and unmistakable central "M" for Maracaibo from the host coin. Moving to the reverse, we see the Santo Domingo initials and denomination sharply presented on the left, while the right side preserves an intact image of Ferdinand's head. Across both sides, the coin exhibits wholesome uncorroded surfaces with limited wear and glossy brown patina. An ideal representative of the type that showcases generous detail from both of its strikings.

The seldom encountered copper coinage of Maracaibo struck during Venezuela's War for Independence was issued by order of Captain General Fernando Mijares 13 March 1813. Struck for a period of about six months, these issues were immediately met with disapproval by the local populace and were generally unaccepted by the public. These crude necessity issues were plagued by forgeries and coupled with the general dissatisfaction from the citizens were ultimately discontinued in September the same year. Research conducted by Venezuelan numismatic scholar Luis Roberto Ponte in the General Archives of the Indies in Seville revealed that a total of 4,987 pounds was exported to Santo Domingo on 15 January 1815. This piece of information gives an explanation as to why so few survivors known today. To view all items from the EMO Collection, click here.

CUBA. 1/4 Real, ND (ca. 1813-15). Ferdinand VII. NGC AU-53.
EMO-325.2 (Plate coin); KM-1 (as Maracaibo); Cal-102 (Same). An exceptional example of this RARE type. Rather well-struck and sparingly handled, the coin exhibits rich brown patina and remains delightfully free from the corrosion or damage so regularly seen on the issue.

Once believed to be a necessity issue by royalists of Maracaibo during the Venezuelan War of Independence, evidence uncovered by the late numismatic researcher Luis Ponte Puigbo at the Archivo de las Indias in Seville confirms that this issue was actually intended for use in Cuba, Santo Domingo, and Puerto Rico. Though the coin's precise mint location remains uncertain, the previous attribution to Maracaibo can now be dismissed. To view all items from the EMO Collection, click here.
