INDIA. Sultans of Gujarat. Tanka, AH 902 (1497). Muhammadabad urf Champanir Mint. Nasir al-din Mahmud I. NGC Unc Details--Removed from Jewelry.
Fr-577; G&G-G78. A VERY RARE gold issue from this ruler. While showing evidence of having been used in jewelry, the coin preserves an abundance of detail across both sides, including a very clear date. The lustrous glow and fineness of the devices attest to the coin's lack of circulation. A great offering of this type which only appears in auction once every few years.

Mahmud Shah's military victories and long reign of over 50 years ensure his place as the preeminent ruler of the Gujarat Sultanate. Yet despite his prominence, Mahmud Shah's precious metal coinage is notably scarce. With the exception of an extremely rare dinar, it was only after his capture of Champanir in 1484, and the subsequent establishment of a mint there, that he appeared to produce gold coinage bearing his name.

Estimate: $2000 - $3000
