GREAT BRITAIN. Prince Edward of Wales (future Edward VIII) Gold Award "Albert" Medal, ND (1924). London Mint. NGC Genuine.
BHM-2795; Eimer-1566. By L. C. Wyon. Diameter: 56mm; Weight: 111.12 gms. Issued for the Royal Society of Arts. Engraved and awarded to Edward, Prince of Wales. Obverse: Bare head of Prince Albert left; Reverse: Female allegory of the Arts standing left, holding palette and presenting flower to Industry seated right, holding distaff; to right, Commerce (as Mercury) seated left on bale, holding winged caduceus. Edge: AWARDED TO H.R.H. EDWARD, PRINCE OF WALES, K.G., IN RECOGNITION OF SERVICES RENDERED TO ARTS, MANUFACTURES AND COMMERCE, / AS PRESIDENT OF THE BRITISH EXHIBITION AND BY HIS VISITS TO THE DOMINIONS AND INDIA. Once heavily scratched and since resurfaced, from which the matte-like nature emanates. Despite this surfaces alterations, however, the piece offers an enchanting overall appearance, with a pale yellow hue that intensifies somewhat as one moves outward from the central areas. Its true value, however, lies within its recipient, as this stunning specimen was awarded to then-Prince of Wales, Edward--the same Edward who, some twelve years later, would succeed his father, George V, as Edward VIII. Edward would never be crowned, though, as he abdicated in favor of marriage to American divorcee, Wallis Simpson. Given such an exalted recipient, it is easy to understand how this UNIQUE offering could excite numerous collectors--not the least of which are those allured and enticed by relics pertaining to the Duke of Windsor and, by extension, the royal family.
