CHINA. Mao Zedong/Yangzi River Swim Attempt Gold Medal, 1971. Switzerland (Valcambi) Mint. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo.
AGW: 0.4503 oz. Diameter: 40.0 mm; Weight: 14.17 gms. Commemorating Mao's attempt at swimming the Yangzi River on 16 July 1966. Obverse: Head left; Reverse: Decorated edifice above horizontal view of the Yangzi River; below, open book reading WUHAN and the date of the swim attempt. Edge: Reeded. A VERY RARE and interesting medallic issue, especially in gold, this cameoed proof celebrates the fifth anniversary of Chairman Mao's attempt at swimming the difficult river. 1966 marked the 11th annual crossing the Yangzi in Wuhan, and Mao took the opportunity to join 5,000 other swimmers in the event. It stood as a puzzling and rather dangerous act by the then-72 year old revolutionary, though he saw it as an attempt to make a bold statement to the nation following earlier setbacks in the decade.

Estimate: $3000 - $4000
