ENGLAND, National Art Competition, 1857, a copper electrotype award by A. Vechte, bust of Queen Victoria left, surrounded by allegorical figures of Genius, Justice, Truth, Science, Fame and Time, the last-named holding a shield, named (Robert P. Notley, 1861, Stage IIIb), 145mm, 198.75g (cf. Burt, The Medal 5, p.48-9; BDM VI, 214; E 1512; cf. DNW 132, 1594). Very fine; in original maroon gilt-blocked leather case of issue £60-£80

Robert Pledge Notley (1838-1921) was a London architect. Awarded in the annual National Competition of the students of all the art schools in the UK between 1857 and 1865, the medal is the highest prize for success in art given by the Science and Art Dept of the Committee of Council on Education.
