Hanau GERMANY, XIV International Amerikanisten-Kongress, Stuttgart [14th International Congress of Americanists], 1904, a bronze plaque by Mayer & Wilhelm, busts of Alexander von Humboldt and Aimé Bonpland in medallions, rev. mountainous landscape, 60 x 40mm, 59.97g (Storer 1682; Brettauer 540; Wurzb. 3790; Slg. Julius 455a; cf. Hirsch 362, 3477). Extremely fine; in original cream card box £40-£60 --- Provenance: bt Frankfurter Münzhandlung, December 1999 Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer and proponent of Romantic philosophy and science; Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland (1773-1858) was an explorer and botanist who travelled with Alexander von Humboldt in Latin America from 1799 to 1804. The International Congress of Americanists was initially held every two years, the first being staged in Nancy, France in 1875. The 14th Congress ran from 18 to 23 August 1904. |
