Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) was a polymath, geographer, naturalist, explorer and proponent of Romantic philosophy and science; Aimé Jacques Alexandre Bonpland (1773-1858) was an explorer and botanist who travelled with Alexander von Humboldt in Latin America from 1799 to 1804. The International Congress of Americanists was initially held every two years, the first being staged in Nancy, France in 1875. The 14th Congress ran from 18 to 23 August 1904.
