ISLAMIC, 'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Mansur, AH 136-158 / AD 754-775. Dirham (Silver, 26 mm, 2.71 g, 4 h), al-Rayy, AH 146 = 763/4. 'lā ilāha illā / Allāh waḥdahū / lā sharīka lahū' ('There is no deity but Allah, the One, there is no partner to Him' in Arabic); in the margin, 'bism Allāh ḍuriba hādhā al-dirham bi al-Rayy sana sitt wa arbaʿīn wa miʾa' ('In the name of Allah. This dirham was struck in al-Rayy in the year 146' in Arabic). Rev. Citing the Caliph's son and heir al-Mahdi Muhammad within two concentric circles, 'mimmā amara bihī a/l-Mahdī Muḥammad / ibn amīr al-muʾminīn' ('From that ordered by al-Mahdi Muhammad, son of the Commander of the Believers' in Arabic).
