The last Umayyad caliph, Marwan II ibn Muhammad, faced a considerably larger Abbasid army in the Battle of the Zab and was defeated, which brought the Umayyad Caliphate to an end. Lot description:

'Abbasid Caliphate. temp. Al-Saffah. AH 132-136 / AD 749-754. AR Dirham (28.2mm, 2.79 g, 6h). Ifriqiya mint. Dated AH 134 (AD 751/2). Umayyad type, with five plain annulets in obverse margin and surat al-Ikhlas in reverse field. Klat -; Lowick -; cf. CNG Islamic Auction 1 (25 May 2022), lot 81 (same obverse die). Overstruck on an earlier post-Reform dirham, with traces of undertype clearly visible on both sides. VF. Extremely rare.

The undertype was evidently overstruck so that the new obverse die was aligned at 180 degrees to the old reverse. The top line of the surat al-Ikhlas of the undertype is visible below the mint-name, and al-din kullihi can clearly be seen at 10h in the obverse margin!

Estimate: 4000 USD
