"Frisian Recognition of US Independence" silver Specimen Medal 1782 SP62 PCGS, Betts-602. 44mm. By Barend Christiaan van Calker. Frisia was the first European state to recognize the government of the fledgling States United in North America. The attractive obverse design includes three standing figures. A Frisian in ancient armor appears at center and is grasping the hand of the Indian maiden, symbolizing America, to his right. Below the maiden's feet are the links from a broken chain and she is depicted trampling on a scepter. The warrior's back is turned to a female figure representing Great Britain. An angel flies above the figures, presenting the free hat of the Netherlands to America. The reverse includes a small shield being held by a hand at the top and Dutch text below.
