Ukraine
Proof silver "Kyiv Rus' Baptism" 100 Hryven (Kilo) 2008 PR67 Ultra Cameo NGC, KM 527. 100mm. Commemorating Kyiv Rus' Baptism. A rare emission reportedly of only 800 pieces, issued by the National Bank of Ukraine.

The Baptism of Kyiv Rus' in 988 is a pivotal event in the history of Eastern Europe, marking the official adoption of Christianity by Kyiv Rus', a medieval state that encompassed parts of modern-day Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus. This event is traditionally attributed to the reign of Prince Volodymyr (Vladimir) the Great, who ruled from 980 to 1015.

Before the baptism, Kyiv Rus' was a pagan state, with its inhabitants practicing various forms of Slavic paganism. The conversion to Christianity began with Prince Volodymyr's personal decision to embrace the faith. According to historical accounts, Volodymyr considered various religions, including Islam, Judaism, and different Christian denominations. He eventually chose Byzantine Christianity, influenced by political considerations and the impression made by the splendor of the Byzantine rite. The choice of Byzantine Christianity also led to the strengthening of ties with the Byzantine Empire, which had significant cultural and political implications for Kyiv Rus'.
