Lot description: Harold II Harold II (1066), PAX type with Sceptre [BMC I; N 836; S 1186], Penny, Cambridge, Beorhtric, Gp A, +harold rex anglo, rev. +brihtric on gra', 1.32g/3h (Bt 38, this coin; Pagan, NM p.195 [one example noted]; Jacob –; BMC –). Cleaned and with a scratch before the king's face, otherwise good very fine and extremely rare £1,500-£1,800 --- The single example specimen known to Pagan came from the Rotherham hoard and is now in the British Museum; none were included in Chew Valley. Beorhtric is not known as a moneyer under Edward the Confessor. |
