Ferdinand & Isabella "Pewter Wreck" Real ND (1474-1504)-S Sea Salvaged NGC, Seville mint, Cal-415. 3.00gm. Salvaged from the "Pewter Wreck" (Sunk in the mid-1500's off Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic). With a crisp monogram. Sold with COA in a detailed folder with the wreck's info.

The "Pewter" is an unidentified wreck site that was named after the largest discovery of pewter in a shipwreck. Located off Punta Cana, the remains of a mid-16th century cargo vessel (late 1540's – early 1560's) are loosely attributed with Spanish merchant origin. In 2011, the beginning of a two-and-a-half-year cargo recovery process begun by Anchor Research Salvage. The cargo and artifacts were located under several inches of rock and required divers to chisel through the barrier, however, what was uncovered was astonishing. An intact export cargo of merchandise was found – a plethora of coinage, over 1,200 pieces of pewter tableware, guns, brass bowls and weights from Nuremburg, Venetian-style glass, bronze mortars cast in Castilian foundries, bars of tin (likely mined in Cornwall), brass candlesticks, ceramics, bone combs, and many more artifacts. Furthermore, since the pewter was never exposed to the air, the preservation of the artifacts is almost as perfect as the moment they left their original workshops. Many early colonial and peninsular coins were recovered, the pewter Wreck being one of the very few documented shipwrecks carrying Catholic Kings coinage.
