Lot description: Mexico Philip IV "Jupiter" Cob 8 Reales ND (1634-1659) Mo-P Fine Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, Mexico city mint, KM45, Cal Type-31. 19.92gm. Salvaged from the "Jupiter wreck"(sunk in 1659 off Jupiter Inlet, Florida). The San Miguel Arcángel was a small "aviso" ship, designated to carry letters quickly to Spain. In its fateful day, it carried some treasure counting with unauthorized Star of Lima coins for the king to see, when a hurricane broke the ship on a sandbar. Few gold and silver pieces were recovered since it was found in the late 1980's in shallow waters, the most important being the Star of Lima issues, with some believing there main hull is yet to be found and that it will provide yet unrecorded Star of Lima gold types. https://coins.ha.com/itm/mexico/mexico-philip-iv-jupiter-cob-8-reales-nd-1634-1659-mo-p-fine-details-saltwater-damage-ngc-/a/61364-21283.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61364-03172024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
