Great Britain
William III "H.M.S. Eagle" 1/2 Crown 1696 VF Details (Saltwater Damage) NGC, KM191.1, S-3481. First bust, large shield, early harp. Salvaged from the H.M.S Eagle (sunk in 1707 off the isles of Scilly, England). An exciting survivor from this lesser known wreck.

The H.M.S. Eagle was a British warship that met its demise in the Scilly naval disaster of October 1707, alongside its most famous sister ship: the Association. Upon returning from the Mediterranean after its participation in the Toulon campaign, amidst the war of the Spanish Succession, severe weather sunk 4 out of the 21-ship Royal Navy fleet off the Isles of Scilly. This claimed the lives of approximately 1,400-2,000 sailors, making this incident one of the worst maritime disasters in British naval history. Salvaging began in the 1960's, recovering a plethora of artifacts from the Association, but little to no treasure from the Eagle, making pieces from such wreck highly coveted and disputed.
