Lot description: Gibraltar British Colony Countermarked 2 Bits ND (1764) XF Details (Damaged) NGC, KM8 (under Martinique), Prid-8 (under Dominica). 4.97gm. Host: Spain Philip V 2 Reales 1723 M-A; Countermark: Type II Heart. An issue traditionally attributed to Martinique (in the Standard Catalog of World Coins) and Dominica, these heart-shaped pierced coins of Pridmore Types I and II are now confidently attributed to Gibraltar. This stellar example exhibits a bold heart-shaped pierce that creates a lovely visual, and the host coin is very sharp despite some evidence of tooling under magnification. An intriguing type that seldom crosses our auction block, represented quite well with this handsome offering. https://coins.ha.com/itm/gibraltar/gibraltar-british-colony-countermarked-2-bits-nd-1764-xf-details-damaged-ngc-/a/61364-21199.s?type=DA-DMC-CoinArchives-WorldCoins-61364-03172024 HID02906262019 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved |
