Foreign Medals - THE JACOB F. SCHOELLKOPF MEDAL AWARDED TO LAWRENCE H. FLETT 1942, UNITED STATES Facing portrait of Schoellkopf, Niagara falls behind. Rev. wreath AWARDED / BY / WESTERN NEW YORK / SECTION / AMERICAN CHEMICAL / SOCIETY / TO / LAWRENCE H. FLETT / MAY 19. 1942Jacob Friedrich Schoellkopf (1819-1899), originally a German leather tanner, was a wealthy pioneer of harnessing the hydroelectric power of the Niagara falls. He purchased the bankrupt Niagara Falls Canal Company and turned the company into a hugely successful business. In 1930, his son endowed the Jacob F. Schoellkopf Medal in his honor, awarded to chemists who have made a significant advancement in science or contribution to the Western New York section of the American Chemical society. The medal has been awarded continuously each year since 1931, making it the oldest award given by any section of the society.

In 1942, the award was given to Dr. Lawrence H. Flett (1896-1979) for 'development and commercialization of detergents of the alkyl arylsulfonate type, dyestuffs, intermediates, and contributions to the W.N.Y. Section of the American Chemical Society'. Flett completed his bachelor's degree in chemistry at MIT and for many years served as director of the New Products division of the Allied Chemical Corporation. After his retirement in 1955, he served as president of the Chemical Marketing Research Association. In 1958 he would also be awarded the Gold Medal of the American Chemical Society, on that same research into detergents that earned him the Jacob F. Schoellkoepf medal. With only 91 awarded over the years, this offering represents a rare opportunity to acquire one of these medals!Hallmark 14k on edge. Fields matted. AV 52.1 mm, 50.74 g.
