Lot description: WORLD Coins Mexico - Cob 8 Reales n.d, Silver, FELIPE III 1598–1621 Crowned arms. Rev. cross of Jerusalem, castles and lions in quarters.Cf. KM. 38.This piece, with its narrow shape with additional protrusion, is a prime example demonstrating the way in which these 8 Reales were produced. Molten silver equal to the weight of eight pieces of 8 Reales was poured onto a slightly downwards slanted slab, where the metal flowed downwards while cooling into a long strip. This strip was called a 'Riel', which was then balanced and cut into equal pieces. Most pieces are thus of semi-regular shape, but some pieces like this show protrusions or bubbles when the flow of metal was hindered. Curious piece!26.68 g. Highly bizarre shape! Due to the narrow, irregular flan the mint, date and essayer are unidentifiable. Based on the fabric of the piece, it is likely from a mint in the Americas. Stamped with unidentified mark, likely from the east (Soumanep?) Very fine Estimate: 200 EUR |
