Lot description:

ITALY. Tuscany. Contessina de Bardi Cast Bronze Alloy Medal, ND (ca. 1740s). EXTREMELY FINE.
Number 251 from Antonio Francesco Selvi's Medici Series, (V&T- 241-354). Diameter: 84.4mm. Obverse: Draped bust of Contessina de Bardi, left, perimeter legend; Reverse: Ship, right, with sails furled, waves below, land to right; perimeter legend ("Glory and Riches") above. From a family with declining fortunes but still some military power, Contessina de Bardi (1390-1473) married Cosimo de Medici circa 1415. The Medici at this time were still a "common" family whose fortunes were on the rise. X-ray fluorescence indicates an alloy of 81% copper, 14% zinc, 3% tin, 1% lead, and 1% other elements. Scratches in the left field. Attractive, with a dark patina, neatly pierced at rim.

Estimate: $150 - $250
