ITALY. Tuscany. Christina of Lorraine Cast Bronze Alloy Medal, ND (ca. 1740s). UNCIRCULATED.
Number 307 from Antonio Francesco Selvi's Medici Series, (V&T- 241-354). Diameter: 84.5mm. Obverse: Draped and veiled bust of Christina, left, perimeter legend; Reverse: Wheat stalk emerging from clouds at upper left, landscape below, perimeter legend above. Christina of Lorraine (Cristina di Lorena; 1565-1637) was the grand-daughter of Catherine de Medici, and became Grand Duchess of Tuscany by marriage to Francesco I de Medici, a distant cousin. X-ray fluorescence indicates an interesting alloy of 53% copper, 14% tin, 14% lead, 8% zinc, 5% iron and 6% other elements. Attractive, with a dark patina. Small spot of corrosion on both the obverse and reverse.
