GREAT BRITAIN. International Exhibition bronze Award Medal, 1862. London Mint. CHOICE UNCIRCULATED.
BHM-2747; Eimer-1553. By L. C. Wyon (after D. Maclise) for Pinches. Diameter: 76mm. Engraved and awarded to W. C. Sargeaunt. Obverse: Britannia seated left, receiving female personifications of Industry, Science, and Agriculture, along with their attributes; to right, three muses personifying the Arts; below in foreground, lion crouching left, clutching trident in forepaws; Reverse: Legend and date in four lines within garlanded oak wreath. Edge: W. C. Sargeaunt, Class III. Charming brown surfaces, with a somewhat glossy and enticing nature.

The official account of the international exhibition notes that W. C. Sargeaunt won this award in Class III for "sugars and preserved fruits; illustrative series of sugars and preserved fruits produced in the colony" (of Natal). Natal was a British colony in south-eastern Africa, founded in 1843. A great British type that has a colonial and South African connection.

Estimate: $150 - $300
